Gastroenterology
Gastroenterology Department
The Endoscopy Center and The Gastroenterology Center, we provide a wide range of medical services. We treat a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, large intestine, liver, bile, and pancreas) from emergency cases to cancer treatment.
We perform gastroscopy using nasal endoscopy, which minimizes the vomiting reflex, and painless colonoscopy using conscious sedation, UPD, and advanced endoscopic manipulation techniques.
We try to make a diagnosis on the same day of the initial visit whenever possible. As the next step, we will proceed with further examinations to confirm the diagnosis, and decide on the treatment method, taking into consideration not only the condition but also the quality of life (QOL).

Gastroenterology initiatives
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
We perform more than 10,000 gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures annually, including ARMS/ARMP for reflux esophagitis/gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), ESD for early stage cancer of esophagus, stomach and colon, EVL/EIS for esophago-gastric varices, ERCP/EUS for biliopancreatic diseases, and ERCP/EUS for gastrointestinal metallic stenting.
ERCP/EUS for esophago-gastric varices, ERCP/EUS for biliopancreatic diseases, and metallic stenting for gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts are widely performed.
We always strive for painless endoscopy and provide painless gastroscopy and colonoscopy by making full use of the latest technologies such as nasal endoscopy, conscious sedation, and endoscopy insertion shape monitoring device (UPD), as well as advanced endoscope operation techniques possessed by our doctors.

Liver Disease
In addition to general medical care for chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis caused by various causes, we provide new antiviral treatment for hepatitis C and antiviral treatment for hepatitis B.
We also provide contrast echography for hepatocellular carcinoma and RFA (radiofrequency coagulation therapy) and TACE (transarterial chemoembolization) as treatment.
We also provide treatment for esophageal varices in patients with cirrhosis (EVL, EIS, BRTO, etc.) and Denver shunt placement (PV shunt) for refractory ascites.

Emergency Endoscopy
We are in direct contact with the emergency medical team through the Emergency Endoscopy Hotline 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and respond to a large number of conditions that require emergency endoscopy, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, gastrointestinal foreign bodies, sigmoid colon axis torsion, acute cholangitis, and others.
Due to the nature of our hospital as an acute care hospital and our motto “no refusal emergency,” many emergency cases such as gastrointestinal bleeding/acute abdomen with hematemesis/abdominal pain as the main complaint are brought in by ambulances.
Therefore, the Department of Gastroenterology, the Department of Gastroenterology Surgery, and the Department of Acute Abdomen Syndrome work together as a team to provide emergency treatment, endoscopic treatment, and surgery.
Collaboration between Gastroenterology and Gastroenterology Surgery
One of the main features of our department is its good cooperation with gastroenterological surgeons, such as joint conferences and rounds, and the department provides multifaceted medical care from diagnosis to treatment so that the best medical care can always be provided to patients at the best time.
Even if a gastroenterological surgeon is treating a patient, a gastroenterologist will immediately take care of the patient if endoscopic examination and treatment are necessary, and even if a gastroenterologist is treating a patient, a surgeon will immediately take care of the patient if surgery is necessary. We also have smooth cooperation with other departments such as cardiology, urology, neurology, orthopedics, and palliative medicine, and we maintain close relationships with other hospitals and general practitioners through the Community Relations Office.
